Juno

OK, first the bad: some crass 'n crude language coming out of teen, and some adult, mouths. As an ex-high school teacher I've heard worse--heck, I've been called worse.

But now for the good: this movie comes out pro-life. Not preachy, shrill, or apologetic, just pro-life. A pregnant teen considers an abortion and then decides against it. Can't go through with it. Maybe there's someone in the world that wants--is desperate for--a baby. And so Juno, the title character, played by Ellen Page, decides to bring the baby to term and give it to a "perfect" couple (Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman) who wants a baby.

I won't go into details on the plot--it doesn't turn out exactly as planned--but the story plays out with heart and soul. The parents in the movie (J.K Simmons and Allison Janney) aren't perfect, but they are supportive and apply their brand of earthy wisdom. They don't come off as insensitive dolts. The kids are plausibly naive and charming, potty mouths and all (one line that leapt out at me was Juno saying, "I'm in the middle a situation that's way beyond my maturity level...) and a real, live baby comes into the world and into the arms of a loving parent.

It dealt positively with issues that often are treated  with a shrug. Moreover, it deals with the emotional cost relationships, the consequences of immature sex, (the weight of which nearly always falls on the girl, not the boy) and the challenge of doing the right thing.

I liked the film.
